Aloha Hawaiian Humane Ohana,

These are unprecedented times and we want to update you on the steps we are taking to respond to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.

To help keep our animals, our people and our community safe, we are making the following scheduling and program adjustments in light of guidance from public health officials. Please know that the animals in our care will continue to be our top priority.

Effective today, Tuesday, March 17, our Adoptions, Fostering and most animal Admissions services are by appointment only from 10 am to 6 pm.

Adoptions
To schedule an adoption visit to our Mo'ili'ili campus, please email adoptionsappointment@hawaiianhumane.org.

Emergency Fostering
We urgently need emergency foster care volunteers. No previous foster care orientation is required, just a brief orientation during your scheduled appointment at our Adoptions Center lanai, located at our Mo'ili'ili campus. To help foster a shelter animal, please email fostersappointment@hawaiianhumane.org.

When you arrive, you will be asked a few questions, then given an opportunity to select an animal to foster. We would love for you to be able to foster as long as you are able to, but any amount of time is a big help to the animals. Our foster care team will work with you to arrange the length of fostering and other details.

Additionally, if you would like to foster animals receiving ongoing medical treatment, or those too young for adoption, please let us know when you request an appointment. All medication and supplies are provided to those fostering pets.

To schedule a foster animal pick-up or wellness check, please email fostersappointment@hawaiianhumane.org.

Admissions
In order to provide distance between visitors to our Animal Admissions Center, we are asking that the public make an appointment for the following emergency cases only.

An emergency is:

  • Dangerous Dogs: Contact the Honolulu Police Department if happening in "real-time."
  • Animal Cruelty Cases: Animals in immediate danger of serious injury or death.
  • Stray dogs or cats. However, if it is safe and you have the ability to hold on to the stray dog or cat for a little bit of time, please consider doing so as this will allow us to give more attention to the especially needy cases. You can help reunite the pet with the owner by filing a found animal report at HawaiianHumane.org/FoundReport.
  • We are also suspending owner surrenders except in emergency cases which include: Safety concerns and deceased owners/family.

Please immediately bring in animals in distress: injured, sick or in imminent danger, as well as newborn kittens. NO animals will be turned away.

To make an Animal Admissions appointment or for questions, please email admissionsappointment@hawaiianhumane.org.

Community Spay/Neuter Center
Regular hours remain in place but our staff will instruct you on new procedures to keep you and our staff safe.

  • Free-Roaming Cats: 7 - 9:00 am

Pet Food Bank
The Pet Food Bank's services will operate under the following temporary adjustments until further notice:

  • The Pet Food Bank will be offered twice a week through a drive-through system located in our back parking lot by the rear entrance to the shelter (located off of Kehena Place). Pick-up days will be Tuesdays and Fridays, from 10 am to 2 pm, and to pet owners only.
  • Amount of food will be limited for even distribution, dependent on number of animals in the home for a total of 30 pounds maximum.

For any questions related to the Pet Food Bank, please contact outreach@hawaiianhumane.org.

As this dynamic situation develops, we are planning and adjusting in real time. We will be providing updates to our programs and services on our website and social media platforms. Please check HawaiianHumane.org/COVID-19 for the most up-to-date information.

For all pet owners, please plan for their care should you become ill. Here are some tips:

  • People should identify a family member or friend who can care for pets if someone in the household becomes ill.
  • Have crates, food and extra supplies on hand for quick movement of pets.
  • Keep all animal vaccines up-to-date in the event that boarding becomes necessary.
  • Ensure all medications are documented with dosages and administering directions. Including the prescription from your veterinarian would be helpful.
  • Pets should have identification: Collar with ID tag and microchip (best practice is microchipping).

COVID-19 is a significant public health event unlike any most of us have seen before. We appreciate your continued support of the work we do and are so grateful for your aloha for the animals and our people.
