An emergency can strike the community unexpectedly.  Emergency preparedness offers you and your pet peace of mind.  It is estimated that half of the human deaths during Hurricane Katrina were due to those who refused to leave their pets behind.  As you prepare for your family's emergency kit, also consider the needs of your pets. Plan for your pet with these tips

Hawaiian Humane Society is a designated first responder and partners with the State Emergency Management Services to assist in disaster planning and response.  Emergency Pet Shelters are run by Hawaiian Humane Society staff and volunteers as a public service to the community.  Oahu's Emergency Pet Shelters will open adjacent to people shelters. If you are interested in volunteering as at an Emergency Pet Shelter please fill out the interest form here.  Emergency Pet Shelter Volunteers will be called upon when emergency shelters are opened in the case of natural disasters.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Jeff Chung, Photography Volunteer

Jeff has been a volunteer with the Hawaiian Humane Society since 2013.  As a photography volunteer, Jeff helps capture memories of community events and fundraisers, takes photos of pets available for adoption and even snaps the Society's staff headshots! Jeff is also a foster volunteer and says his favorite memory was seeing his foster cat getting adopted.  Jeff encourages anyone who has an interest in photography (regardless of their skill level) to get valuable experience from volunteering with the Society.  If you are interested in photography volunteering please email Sharon at sgsagayadoro@hawaiianhumane.org

The Hawaiian Humane Society is an education and advocacy organization that shelters, protects, rescues, reunites and rehomes animals. It is Oahu's only open-admission shelter that welcomes all animals. Established in 1883, this non-profit organization is not a chapter of any group as there is no national humane society. Gifts made directly to this independent, local organization help local animals and people. Visit HawaiianHumane.org to learn more.
